The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

From amazon.ca:

In 1959, Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist, takes his four young daughters, his wife, and his mission to the Belgian Congo -- a place, he is sure, where he can save needy souls. But the seeds they plant bloom in tragic ways within this complex culture. Set against one of the most dramatic political events of the twentieth century -- the Congo's fight for independence from Belgium and its devastating consequences -- here is New York Times-bestselling author Barbara Kingslover's beautiful, heartbreaking, and unforgettable epic that chronicles the disintegration of family and a nation.

***

This book kept me captivated mostly through style. The story was interesting in parts, but it just seemed like I had read similar things before, white people struggling in Africa when the white rule is overthrown. The style was wonderful though and the story being told from 5 different perspectives was interesting. I wish that the author would have focused more on the later years of the girls, instead of spending the majority of the novel on the beginnings of their lives, because the different developments of the girls as the years went by would have interested me more and should have gotten more attention.

7/10.
